Feng Shui Tip - Finding your personal trigram
There are a couple of things about the Personal Trigram calculation of which you should be careful. First, when you are calculating, it is important you check the month of birth. If it is January or February, be sure whether the date is before or after Feb 4. If it is before use the prior year as the calculating year.
Second, some authors use the Lunar year for the Personal Trigrams. This is incorrect. Feng Shui uses the Solar Year. That is why we look at Feb 4. It is mostly a constant. The time may vary, but the date is fairly consistant. Since Feng Shui is originally based on the environment and the seasons, (see the Yin and Yang symbolism) the timing from the Sun is key. The time between the solstices and the equinoxes are key points of the year. Dividing the year down further, Feb 4 is the beginning of Spring in the Chinese calendar. This corresponds to the wood trigram of Chen in terms of timing.
So the Lunar calendar does not play a significant role in Feng Shui. It does however in Chinese Astrology, but that is for a different course. Bottom line, remember to use the Solar Calendar.
If the date is on Feb. 4 exactly, you can contact the Institute and we can look up the time cutoff in a Chinese “10,000 year” calendar. (It is in Chinese of course!)
